Golf, philanthropy, Frank Sinatra, and Barbara Marx Sinatra – the four elements that makeup what has become one of the most celebrated annual events in Palm Springs. Hosted by renowned restaurateur Harold Matzner on the exclusive Arnold Palmer-designed golf course at The Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa, the Barbara, and Frank Sinatra Classic promises to be an exceptional day for players looking to enjoy a round of golf with friends while supporting a great cause.
Harold Matzner was introduced to the world of philanthropy through his involvement on numerous boards throughout California’s Coachella Valley. He quickly became known as a generous supporter of charities, including the Desert AIDS Project (DAP), where he currently serves as Chairman Emeritus. It was this connection that led him to organize the Barbara and Frank Sinatra Classic in 2004.
A passionate visionary
Matzner’s vision of uniting golfers with charity was met with enthusiasm by those who knew him well; after all, what better way to give back than through sport? And so began the tournament, which now enjoys the support of many local businesses each year – from sponsorship to silent auction donations – allowing Matzner to raise more money each time the event is held.
Matzner’s commitment to supporting charities
In addition to raising funds for DAP, proceeds from the Barbara and Frank Sinatra Classic have benefited other charities including the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert, Martha’s Village & Kitchen, and the Betty Ford Center at Eisenhower Medical Center. Matzner has been instrumental in ensuring that these organizations receive much-needed support from tournament participants.
Recognizing excellence through awards
The highlight of each tournament is the presentation of awards in honor of some very special people – namely Frank Sinatra and his late wife, Barbara Marx Sinatra (the tournament’s namesake). While the awards are based on playing performance – such as “Most Honest Golfer” or “Closest To Hole” – there is also an annual award called “The Gentleman Award”, which honors individuals who exemplify sportsmanship both on and off the course.
A legacy of giving back
As long as Harold Matzner remains involved in philanthropic efforts in Palm Springs, the Barbara, and Frank Sinatra Classic will continue its mission of bringing together golfers from across the country to support worthy causes while celebrating life’s greatest gifts – friendship, camaraderie, and generosity.
